SNAFU = Situation normal, all fucked up

Hmph, no yritin.

Onko tuplavaara relapsiin ihottuman takia?

L on silminnähden helpottunut.

P.s. Mehiläisen lääkäri sanoi, että on tavannut MONTA lasta jolla NS puhkesi vain kerran, eikä ikinä enää. JEE!!!

P.s.2. Laaja-alueinen ihottuma eikä silti relapsia. JEE!

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Day three of the Big Rash and it´s even bigger. It´s also flaming red and absolutely everywhere.

Picture yourself gaining 1/4 of your bodyweight and add a nasty rash. I couldn´t help but to cry when I watched L try on five different outfits in the morning. She was trying desperately to find the lovely and beautiful girl underneath all that swelling and rash.

I called the hospital. Go see a doctor they told me. Book an appointment at Mehiläinen, ask for a female doctor, that is good with kids who fear doctors.

We are both in tears. I hold her and assure her, that I am not crying because I am worried about the rash (yes I am), but since I am mad at how unfair this all is to her. I tell her we both have the right to feel upset and sad, and crying it out helps us women cope. I try to humour her by saying that if we were men, we would probably brake something or have a beer. "But you drink beer too, Mummy." Hmm, nice try.

Why is the rash getting worse, Prednison is supposed to HELP with skin conditions, not make them worse?

Is it urticaria, if not, what is it and why?

Do we have a double risk of relapse now?

I wish this was a disease with simple answers. If this were to happen, this helps, if not, then this will. But no, with NS you are always absolutely clueless.

We go to the doctor, and she is absolutely charming. She said she had treated a lot of NS kids in her long career, but has never seen a rash this bad, so she does not know what it is and what caused it. She too is clueless. She wonders if it could have something to do with the tapering and the lower amounts of Pred. Or is it a virus? She wants us to go to the hospital.

We both are shedding tears. I feel completely embarrassed at my behaviour. Parents are supposed to be strong. It is clearly humiliating for L to strip down and lie down for the examination. Her eyes follow mine and I really could kick myself, but cannot help but look miserable for her.

I wrote three days ago, how I wondered how I would handle the fear of relapse. Newsflash: Not very well, actually quite poorly. Oh go on then, like a total failure.

At the hospital it is a quiet day and we go straight to the doctor. She says it is for sure urticaria. SIGH OF RELIEF. But, taking her disease in account, they wanted to be more safe than sorry, so all tests were taken. Blood counts, albumin levels, inflammatory tests, throat cultures, pee test, the works.

She gets some antihistamine orally and we wait for the results.

Everything is ok. Results completely normal. No signs of relapse. If the rash is not better by Friday, we need to go back to the hospital. Some tests results we will get later, but for now, all are clear, we  are good to go home.

I feel...well, thankful it is ONLY URTICARIA! L is so relieved. The silent tearful girl of today turns into a chatterbox, yapping away, laughing and joking, all the stress pouring out of her. At home she is fast asleep in an instant. Sleep tight, my dear daughter.

What can I say? Cannot quite describe the amount of worry, but can tell you not to try it at home. It is not nice. Feel like have been hit by bus, then car then train. Feeling very flat indeed.

HOW DO YOU GET USED TO THIS? Everytime something is up, we might end up at the hospital. My child being tested, her upset, me sick with worry.

CAN YOU GET USED TO THIS?

p.s. The doc said she had treated MANY NS-kids who only were sick once and never again! Wehey!

p.s.2 Such a bad rash and no relapse! Wehey!
