Kolmas kerta toden sanoo / Third time´s the charm

Hyviä uutisia! Biopsian tulos normaali. JIPII, vaihtoehdoista paras, minimal change nefroottinen syndrooma jää L:n diagnoosiksi.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Good news! The biopsy showed nothing out of the ordinary. Diagnosis: Minimal Change Nephrotic Syndrome. That is the best one to have, if you have to have one!

Once again, we shall try to taper her off Prednisone, now with a longer taper.

1. week: 25mg every day
2. week: 25mg eod, 20mg eod
3. week: 20mg eod, 15mg eod
4. week: 15mg every day

Then we are at new year (and it HAS to be better than this year, right?) and we will go for a check up, if we get that far without relapsing. The doctor said he would hate it, if we would have to come to the hospital at x-mas, so long taper and let´s hope for the best.

The doctor was kind but honest, warned us of the long journey with this disease. If she does relapse, then we are onto the stronger drugs, possibly Sandimmune.

We´ll cross that brigde when we get there.

What a relief! Minimal Change. The even slightest chance of remission. The complete trust in the doctor and the nurse.

Feels like christmas came early in this house!

6 kk nefroottista syndroomaa takana / 6 months of life with NS

Extremely proud of how my daughter has handled all this and is happy and strong!

Verikokeita / blood tests:  23 kpl

Ultra, röntgen, biopsia / ultrasound, x-ray, biopsy: 3 / 1 / 1

Sairaalapäiviä / days in hospital: 10 kpl

Lääkärikäyntejä / doctor visits: 11 kpl

Rahaa mennyt / money spent: 2900€

(lääkkeet, vitamiinit, lääkärit, polimaksut, sairaalalaskut, taksit, emlat, stiksit, isommat vaatteet jne)
(medicine, vitamines, doctors, hospital bills, taxis, pee sticks, a new wardrobe etc.)

Tomorrow we get the result from the biopsy: Is this really minimal change nephrotic syndrome? Fingers crossed, it is best of all the alternatives.

Biopsia ja laatuhoitoa Lastenklinikalla / Biopsy and quality care at Lastenklinikka

En osaa kuvailla miten helpottavalta tuntui kuulla tuo.

Minuutin hiljaisuus.

Lapsi on ensisijaisesti lapsi, eikä sairas lapsi.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Our appointment on Thursday was on ward K3, kidney and transplant patients, at Lastenklinikka Children´s hospital in Helsinki. I had called earlier to ask how long everything would take that day, since we wanted to have a girlie day in town before the biopsy the next day. About three hours, to see the nephrologist, the anesthesiologist and for the blood tests, they said.

Boy, they were quick, we were in and out in 1,5 hours! It was quite exciting going to a new hospital and especially to a special kidney ward. The staff seemed really nice, everyone who passed us in the hall stopped to chat.

I had written down in the questionnaire about the child, that I didn´t want things explained in front of her. I wanted to tell her things, the way she understood them and wouldn´t kill herself stressing. So the doctor´s went through the procedure with me when she was in the playroom. It was a piece of cake apparently, could be compared with a blood test even.

So happily we had dinner and did a little shopping in town, her showing off her cannula on her arm. We came home for the night and I explained the biopsy to her and showed her this picture so she could understand. It was the least scary I could find.

I told her she had to be really still, so they would not poke her in the wrong part with the needle. To be really still they had to make her fall asleep. She thought I was fooling her, that they were going to do a real surgery. I assured her I would never lie to her. It would be stupid of me, since she would never trust me again.

We left for the hospital early in the morning. She only took her pills, no food or drink. She was really scared. We got there and we´re greeted by a lovely older nurse. L was shaking and biting her lips raw on the hospital bed. I tried to make her feel better, even though I had felt better myself.

She was given premedication straight away. She changed into hospital clothes (not her favourites) and lay down on the bed. Oh my, she was drunk as a skunk! Giggling away, saying I had three heads, trying to get up and then pissing herself laughing when she couldn´t. It was kind of scary to see her so far off this planet, but at least she had no worries or fears anymore.

She was then wheeled into the room where they would perform the biopsy. They put the sleeping drug into the cannule and that hurt her, since she started to tremble her lip and look at me pleeding, but that lasted for seconds, then she was asleep.

"Thank you to the mother!" They ushered me out in the hall. That was the most upsetting thing ever. To have to leave her, asleep, with all the equiptment and doctors. Piece of cake my ass. I sat in the hall. I had my study papers with me, but could focus only on staring at the wall and not bursting into tears.

I had sat there a while, wondering how long it would take. L´s nurse came looking for me. She wanted a word. She told me she thought it was quite dangerous what I was doing, keeping my daughter in the dark. Really. If this wasn´t stressful enough, let´s start having a go at my motherhood skills, why don´t we?

Now I was in tears. Why did they ask us for preferences, if they would just use them as weapons against us? I was NOT keeping my daughter in the dark, I was protecting her. I know her, what works and what does not. She is a horrible stresser and there have been numerous times, when things have been said in front of her that have really upset her. It has taken me weeks to try and explain and save the situation. I told her everything, in my way, the safe way.

She said, after all, this biopsy was a piece of cake, we would be coming here all the time! Something snapped inside my head. A PIECE OF CAKE! It might be FOR THEM. It really was not for us! I had never had a sick child before. I was trying to do my best. Why did they always make the mother feel non-important and then try and take her responsibilities away from her? Nurses come and go, some are great, some are equipped with a nasty attitude. I am her mother!

After a long talk we finally understood each other. I think she understood why I had written what I had. We had had it rough and I had no trust and was wary, all for a reason. I understood, when she explained how it would benefit me too, if I would let the nurses take care of L. She was worried I wasn´t letting her do her job properly, she wanted to take care of my daughter and build her trust but she couldn´t do it ,if I wouldn´t let her. She was a professional, she said, she explained everything to THE CHILD, used play techniques, they even lended out some stuff to play with, they bonded with the children. I apologized to her for having my very own nasty attitude. But it didn´t come out of nowhere.

This nurse was the first to tell me, that NS is absolutely horrible. She would never ever want it for her child. It is a long, hard, emotionally draining disease. For the child and the whole family. Some had it for the rest of their lives. Some grow out of it in their teens. We needed help and support. That really got to me, I was crying buckets. It is funny how someone admitting my daughter had a terrible disease out loud was the sweetest music to my ears.

So far we had been made to believe this was a breeze. Maybe cured after one go. No biggie. My questions had been unanswered. I had had the rolling of the eyes, the deep sighs. I had felt belittled. Stupid for asking questions, for wanting more information. I had gotten the "Here are the pills, go home"-treatment. My daughter had hardly been spoken to, a minor player in all this. I had been told not to read the internet, not go ahead of things. If I think about the picture painted before us in the hospital six months ago and compare our life with that picture, Ii makes me laugh. I would if I wasn´t so angry!

I thanked the wonderful nurse for being honest. That was what I had wanted all this time, honesty. We hugged. I really trusted her now. Someone said we could go and get L now, she had woken up. I was all red eyed, but the nurse said "Show her that you have been crying."

Spending time with a drunk girl before biopsy, spending time with a dementia patient after the biopsy. She was still on another planet for quite some time. I answered the same questions time after time. "Is it over?" "Yes, darling." A minute. "Is it over?" "Yes, darling, it is." All she had was a little red colour from the disinfection cream and a little patch where the needle had gone in on her back.

I relaxed and let the nurse do her job. She was fine. It was over.

Soon the doctor came to tell me that the needle had hit a blood vessel and she was bleeding internally a little. She would have to stay for observation and an ultra sound later on. Okay, just bring the mattress!

The doctor and I had a long chat while the nurse spent time with L. He too was brutally honest. This is a long and difficult disease, can be compared to a life of a organ transplant surviver with the medication and worries. He told me everything, from the start, calmly and thorougly. I told him we had received a simple A4 paper, googled and printed of the disease from the other hospital. No-one had gone through the side effects of Prednisone with us.

The doctor explained all the future options we have. Just in case! Halleluja. He said they were the ones who took care of the medical side of things, but had no idea what it was like to live with NS every day. He suggested we seek support and help and told us where to get it from.

Seriously. Are you thinking what I am thinking? A chat that should have happened six months ago? Better late than never, obviously, but I cannot but wonder how different everything would be if this was the way they would have treated this at first. I have wasted so much energy and time, spending hours every night online, looking for information. Reading other parent´s stories, wondering why us and everyone is having it so rough when it was supposed to be a breeze?

I asked if we could pretty please be transferred to this hospital. They agreed. YES! Gets even better, our nurse came to say that she would always be our nurse from now on. DOUBLE YES! L said she really liked this hospital and she rated the whole experience as 8/10!

We spent the night, got a good rest. No one was wearing clogs on the night shift. The nurses whispered while taking care of the girl next to us. No one slapped the lights on first thing in the morning. Let´s be fair, it wasn´t the old hospital´s fault the baby cried non-stop for 8 days on our last visit, but it still does nothing to brighten the experience. The two hospitals are like salt and sugar.

We got pamflets and brochures from the Kidney and Liver foundation. They rated NS as a serious illness. They had advice on how to handle everything, the sick child, the siblings, family, work and school. In an ideal situation all these would have been given to us on day one. We would have been informed on everything, the side effects of Prednisone, the emotional toll, the long journey, where to get help, how to live with this illness. It would have been really important to be listened to and spoken to.

But now we have it all. Most importantly we have trust in the people who are looking after our daughter. The biopsy really was a piece of cake in trusted hands. Lastenklinikka Hospital rules!

We are home now. I am emotionally drained yet again, but in a good way. The kids are playing hospital with all the equiptment L got to take home. I too had my turn at this hospital. The "lab fetcher" put a cannula on me after I complained about the rash on my hand for cleaning after messy kids!
P.s. You are not to test the morning pee. It is too concentrated. Test the day one. ARGH! I can remember a few stressful days this piece of information would have saved.

P.s.s She cannot jump or run for a week, easy does it to control the bleeding. No gym class and no sauna.

Testing, testing, 1, 2, 3

MDD labran tulokset tulevat noin kuukauden päästä.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

She has been +2 for three days, so I consulted the doctor, who consulted another doctor. They put her back on 30mg Prednison every day. Bloody hell, we took the pills every other day for under a week, and are already going downhill. Hopefully they will do the trick though, and we will avoid a full relapse.

The doctor said the biopsy if off the schedule if she relapses. (Edit: Not true, according to the Lastenklinikka Hospital)

L cried today, worried she would never get off the drugs. Then she got worried about her cheeks going narrow again, what if she would be bullied at school for being skinny again?! I told her it doesn´t look like she´s going to get off the drugs any time soon. She said, yes, yes, but when she starts second class! Oh dear, it would be great if this all would be over by next autumn, but somehow I doubt it.

We went to MDD laboratories (the American version under the link) to get a sample kit today. L didn´t even want to come in, "just in case they wanted to do a blood test".

This is a brilliant test that tests everything! The key to health, I (and a million doctor´s) believe, lies in your gut, and what ever clues to helping my daughter this test will give us, is all a big bonus!

This test evaluates digestion, absorption, gut flora, and the colonic environment, and evaluates for parasites using microscopic examination and EIA testing. The profile is indicated for all chronic GI problems, for acute bowel pattern changes, and for many systemic diseases and provides a sensitivity panel for treating pathogenic flora.

The samples are being sent to America. It costs us 419€, but then I can say we have done it all.

The service has been great, they have been brilliant with all my questions. We get the results from a private functional medicine doctor in four weeks.

Lucky me

L toista päivää +2, olisiko tulossa relapsi numero kolme alle puolessa vuodessa? Voi &%#¤"*!!!

Luen edellisessä postauksessa olevan, itse kirjoittamani tsemppi puheen ja yritän elää kuten saarnaan. En keskity huolehtimiseen vaan valitaanpa päivän aiheeksi joku mukava juttu: kiitollisuus!

Molemminpuolinen kunnioitus toimii.

Mulla on maailman parhaat pomot. Kaikki mitä ehdotan, on käynyt aina.

L:n pikkuveli aloittaa joulukuussa tarhan.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

L is showing +2 for a second day. This would be the third relapse in under six months. "#¤%&/*!!!!

I will read my own pep talk post and try and practise what I preach. I will try not to worry and today I will concentrate on giving thanks.

I have the Best Bosses in the world.

There was an article in a magazine about the work place and thow they handle a mum with a sick child and lots of days off due to this. Frightning read. I cannot even imagine the amount of stress, having to deal with a sick child and an angry boss and grumpy co-workers on top of everything!

I have tried to keep my absences to a minimum due to this illness, but of course there will and have been days that I have been needed at home or I have been emotionally drained. I have felt nothing other than deep sympathy from my bosses and co-workers in these situations.

I know I am very privileged.

My youngest starts kindergarden in December. I will continue to work only three times a week at the store. The computer work I can do at home, whenever, in the middle of the night if I want, as long as it gets done.

This is the only way I will keep myself functioning and sane, keep the organic meals on the table, be there for all three kids and deal with everything that has to do with this stupid disease. So less money, but no burn out!

Situations change and hopefully she will get better, but for now this is perfect. So thank you my Dear Bosses. Thank you my co-workers for listening and for your Friendship. Hopefully I have given something back to you, if nothing else, funny stories from my "journey" so far:)

I will try and do my best today at work, but forgive me if I put the trash in the wrong bin.

Letter to another mother

Hi,

this might all sound new agey to you, but this thing needs stronger measures and all the help we can get, so here goes.

My daughter was diagnosed 5,5 months ago. Since then I have been a nervous wreck, staying up untill late researching, writing my blog about this and reading all the Facebook group posts. My life was NS 24/7.

When I too heard about the upcoming biopsy after 2 relapses, I went mental. I had to take the trash out like 10 times a day to go out and cry. I needed help. I knew when the day of the biopsy would come, I would crumble. I needed to get myself sorted out, so I could be there for my daughter.

I booked an appointment with a therapist and did some deep thinking and soul searching.

The therapist said this disease is MY JOURNEY and it won´t affect my daughter that much if I don´t let it. Kids are strong. Adults, we carry all kinds of shit:)

It is hard to put into words what she told me and what I got from it. But I left smiling. This thing, NS, it won´t break me, I LAUGH AT IT. If I feel anxious in the morning, we go out, we have fun, it disappears.

It will try to consume me and my thoughts, but I won´t let it. Life is huge, and NS is just one little tiny thing. There are kids with cancer and worse diseases. If you look at your daughter closely, she is herself, happy, in no pain, has friends, can do everything her friends can. So her kidney spills protein, big deal. She is not in a wheelchair. Make NS tiny, and it will become tiny!

There will be days, NS will come and roll over everything, if we are weak. So make yourself strong. Set an example for your daughter. Life and it´s battles will not crush you. You will learn from them, you will be stronger and wiser. Your daughter will look at you and copy you and she will be stronger too. That is a great gift you can give your daughter.

So TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Do things that will make YOU happy. If you are happy, your daughter will be happy, NS or no NS.

POSITIVE thinking and POSITIVE energy. That will make this thing disappear.

It´s hard, but so worth it. My daughter has NS but we are smiling.

A huge big hug, I know you can do it. I know, because I know you love your daughter very much, and would do anything for her. But love yourself too, and do this for the both of you.

T X

Täällä ollaan / Still here

Not quite there yet...

Just a quick update. We are doing just fine. She went back to negative after the relapse within 10 days. So the blessed bastards, i.e the steroids, are working.

I am still busy playing Dr. House. Just cannot get it in my head that these idiopathic diseases "just come from somewhere". FROM WHERE SOMEWHERE?! Always have been bad with locations and directions, but I will find this mysterious place even if it kills me.

I have found a few interesting clues, and we have been to Functional medicine doctor about them (yes, the diet does matter). I am waiting for more information and test results on these before I post about them.

L is on 25mg of Prednison every other day untill her biopsy in two weeks. We will tell her only the day before, when we have to go in for blood tests and to see the nefrologist. We get to go home and come back the next morning for the op. I am not waiting for the night before, when she will know what will happen the next morning. I am assuming she will blame me for everything.

I am controlling this disease with a positive attitude, laughter and fun. We have been positive and that´s why I haven´t posted so much. This disease isn´t a part of our lives, not controlling us with fear, not letting it logde inside my head rent free any more. NS wants to control your thoughts, wants you to fear it and cry over it, that´s how it will get more power. It is strong and persistant, and will try to get in my head, and every now and then it does, but mostly it is just tiny and insignificant. Sucker.
